As a teenager I had always wanted to do some form of Martial Arts but due to other sporting commitments I just never found the time to fit in.
Years of Rugby and Football was starting to take it's toll on my body and by the age of 27 I was considering not playing any more competitive sport due to a serious knee injury.
After 3 months rehab and physio a work colleague suggested coming along to Karate to improve my flexibility- after one lesson I was hooked!
My first instructor was Sensei Darren Chan who is one of the best Karate technicians I have ever met. Darren then introduced me to his Instructor,
Shihan Rick McElroy and from there on I never looked back.
After working my way through the grades I reached 1st Dan in 2004 and decided to start my own class to put something back into Karate. After several years of teaching in Coulsdon and now being a 3rd Dan a opportunity came up for me to Teach at the Arc in Caterham and have moved my class there every Thursday between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. Where I teach from the age of 7 upwards.
I have always been a quiet chap, but my confidence has grown over the past few years, my asthma has improved greatly and I am much fitter than I was 20 years ago.
The most important lesson I have learnt in the last 10 years is to Never Give UP.
If this inspires just one person to get off their backside and actually take up a Martial Art i'll be a happy man.
